Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Silver Medal

$90.00

Rutherford B. Hayes secured the contentious 1876 Presidential election by just one electoral vote, coupled with a promise to serve only one term. A Major General during the Civil War, Hayes was deeply aware of the ongoing divisions in the country. In his inaugural address, he expressed his desire for “not merely a united North or a united South, but a united country.” While advocating for reconciliation and the reconstruction of the South, Hayes also focused on safeguarding the rights of all Americans, particularly formerly enslaved individuals. When racist laws aimed at restricting Black Americans’ voting rights reached his desk, he used his veto power, affirming that every citizen deserved “to cast one unintimidated ballot and to have his ballot honestly counted.” During the Great Railway Strike of 1877, he further exercised his executive authority by sending federal troops to restore order and protect both public and private property.

At the end of his term, Hayes honored his commitment to be a one-term President and chose not to seek re-election. He retired from politics but remained active in efforts to improve the nation, particularly through educational initiatives aimed at Black Americans, believing education was key to fostering equality and self-reliance for all.

This stunning Presidential Silver Medal, made of 99.9% fine silver, commemorates Rutherford B. Hayes’ presidency and was expertly crafted by the United States Mint.
