The coins in this program honor the National World War II Memorial and the dedication and sacrifice of American soldiers and civilians during the war. This memorial serves as a significant venue for commemorative and educational events that pay tribute to America’s “Greatest Generation” and their efforts to safeguard freedoms for future generations.
The obverse design features six figures collaborating to support the Earth, symbolizing the unity among the military branches—Army Air Force, Coast Guard, Navy, Army, Marine Corps—and the Merchant Marine during World War II. Inscriptions include “1941-1945,” “WORLD WAR II MEMORIAL,” “DEFENDERS OF FREEDOM,” “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “2024.”
On the reverse, the design presents a view from beneath the Baldacchino sculptural canopy inside the Victory Pavilion of the World War II Memorial. This sculpture showcases four eagles holding a laurel wreath, encircling a globe centered on the Pacific Ocean. Inscriptions on this side read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “VICTORY,” “IN THE AIR,” “AT SEA,” “ON LAND,” “WWII MEMORIAL,” and “ONE DOLLAR.” Additionally, a surcharge of $10 for each silver dollar sold will be directed to the non-profit Friends of the National World War II Memorial, supporting the National Park Service in the maintenance and repair of the memorial, as well as educational and commemorative programs.
