The United States Mint’s American Innovation $1 Coin Program is a multi-year series that celebrates innovation and innovators through $1 coins from each state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands. The American Innovation $1 Coins available in rolls and bags feature uncirculated finishes and are minted at the Philadelphia and Denver Mints. The Ohio coin is the first release of 2023.
The reverse design of the Ohio American Innovation $1 Coin symbolizes the Underground Railroad. It features two strong hands grasping each other, with the upper arm pulling the lower arm upward, representing the support and strength of this critical network. A chain linked to a rustic shackle around the lower arm’s wrist snaps and fragments, symbolizing the hope of freedom. Inscriptions include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “UNDERGROUND RAILROAD,” and “OHIO.”
The obverse design showcases a striking profile of the Statue of Liberty, along with the inscriptions “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “$1.” It also features a privy mark of a stylized gear, symbolizing industry and innovation.
The year of minting, mint mark, and “E PLURIBUS UNUM” are incused along the edge of the coins.
