American Innovation $1 Coin 2024 Rolls and Bags – Illinois

$100.00

John Lane, an Illinois farmer and blacksmith, transformed agriculture by inventing the first steel plow from a sawmill blade. In the 19th century, as America expanded westward, traditional wooden plows struggled with the tough, compacted soils of the Midwest. Lane’s steel plow efficiently tackled the challenging midwestern sod, paving the way for the region that would come to be known as “America’s Breadbasket.” Remarkably, despite the success and popularity of his invention, Lane never patented the steel plow. Instead, he continued to craft them by hand for fellow farmers. This decision allowed blacksmiths across the nation to create their own versions of the steel plow, forever changing the lives of American farmers and the agricultural landscape of the country.
