The United States Mint American Innovation $1 Coin Program is a multi-year initiative celebrating innovation and innovators through $1 coins representing each state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands. The Maine coin is the third release for 2024 and was minted at both the Philadelphia and Denver Mints.
The reverse (tail) design of the Maine American Innovation $1 Coin features a profile portrait of Dr. Bernard Lown, accompanied by an illustration of his direct current defibrillator in action. The design is inscribed with “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “BERNARD LOWN, M.D.,” “DIRECT CURRENT DEFIBRILLATOR,” and “MAINE.”
On the obverse (head) side, the coin displays a striking profile of the Statue of Liberty, along with the inscriptions “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “$1.” It also features a stylized gear as a privy mark, symbolizing industry and innovation.
The edge of the coin includes the year of minting, mint mark, and the inscription “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
