The American Women Quarters™ Program is a four-year initiative celebrating the achievements and contributions of women who have shaped the history of our Nation. Running from 2022 to 2025, the Mint will issue five new quarters each year, featuring reverse designs that honor a diverse group of prominent American women.
This program recognizes women from various fields, including suffrage, civil rights, abolition, government, humanities, science, space, and the arts. The honorees come from ethnically, racially, and geographically diverse backgrounds.
Among those celebrated is Bessie Coleman, a pioneering aviator who became the first African American and Native American woman pilot, as well as the first African American to earn an international pilot’s license.
The reverse design captures Bessie Coleman as she prepares for flight, reflecting her determination and the freedom she sought in the skies, a stark contrast to her experiences on the ground. The inscriptions on the coin include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “QUARTER DOLLAR,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “BESSIE COLEMAN,” and “6.15.1921,” marking the date she received her pilot’s license.
The common obverse features a portrait of George Washington, originally sculpted by Laura Gardin Fraser for the 1932 quarter, which commemorated Washington’s bicentennial. Inscriptions include “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “2023.”
Celebrate the courage and accomplishments of women who have made a positive impact by starting or expanding your collection of the new American Women Quarters today.
