The American Women Quarters™ Program is a four-year initiative that celebrates the achievements and contributions of women who have significantly influenced our Nation’s history, paving the way for future generations. From 2022 to 2025, the Mint will release five new quarters each year, featuring reverse designs that honor a diverse group of prominent American women.
This year, the quarters highlight women who have made remarkable contributions across various fields, including suffrage, civil rights, abolition, government, the arts, science, and space. The honorees come from a wide range of ethnic, racial, and geographical backgrounds.
Among those honored is Edith Kanakaʻole, an indigenous Hawaiian composer, chanter, kumu hula, and custodian of native culture and traditions.
The reverse design of the quarter features a portrait of Edith Kanakaʻole, with her hair and lei poʻo (head lei) blending into a Hawaiian landscape, symbolizing her dedication to preserving the natural environment and traditional Hawaiian culture. The inscription “E hō mai ka ʻike,” meaning “granting the wisdom,” reflects the vital role that hula and chants play in this preservation. Additional inscriptions include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “25¢,” and “EDITH KANAKAʻOLE.”
The common obverse design portrays George Washington, originally crafted by Laura Gardin Fraser as part of a candidate entry for the 1932 quarter, which marked the bicentennial of Washington’s birth. Inscriptions on this side include “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “2023.”
Celebrate the courage and achievements of women who have driven positive change in our society. We invite you to start or expand your collection of the American Women Quarters today.
