The American Women Quarters celebrate a remarkable array of American women who have made significant contributions across various fields, including suffrage, civil rights, abolition, government, humanities, science, space, and the arts. These honorees come from diverse ethnic, racial, and geographic backgrounds.
Dr. Mary Edwards Walker was a trailblazing Civil War surgeon, as well as an advocate for women’s rights and dress reform. Driven by her determination, she became the first woman U.S. Army surgeon in 1863, serving as a “Contract Acting Assistant Surgeon (civilian).” She remains the only woman to have been awarded the Medal of Honor.
The coin’s reverse features a striking depiction of Dr. Walker holding her pocket surgical kit, adorned with the Medal of Honor on her uniform and a surgeon’s pin at her collar. After receiving the award, she wore the Medal of Honor for the rest of her life. The left side of the design highlights the Medal of Honor’s details, along with the inscriptions: “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “25 CENTS,” “DR. MARY EDWARDS WALKER,” and “MEDAL OF HONOR 1865.”
The common obverse showcases a portrait of George Washington, originally designed by Laura Gardin Fraser as a candidate entry for the 1932 quarter, commemorating Washington’s bicentennial. Inscriptions include “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “2024.”
