The American Women Quarters series celebrates a diverse group of remarkable American women who made significant contributions across various fields, including suffrage, civil rights, abolition, government, humanities, science, space, and the arts. The honorees come from a rich tapestry of ethnic, racial, and geographical backgrounds.
Among these distinguished women is the Honorable Patsy Takemoto Mink, a pioneering Member of Congress who advocated for gender and racial equality, affordable childcare, and bilingual education. She was a key champion of Title IX legislation, which prohibits sex discrimination in any education program or activity receiving federal funding. In honor of her legacy, Title IX was posthumously renamed the Patsy T. Mink Equal Opportunity in Education Act.
The coin’s reverse features a depiction of Patsy Takemoto Mink holding her landmark “TITLE IX” legislation, set against a view of the Capitol Building, specifically the south wing, where she served in the House of Representatives. The lei she wears symbolizes her home state of Hawaii. The inscriptions include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “PATSY TAKEMOTO MINK,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “25 CENTS,” and “EQUAL OPPORTUNITY IN EDUCATION.”
On the obverse (heads) side, the coin features a portrait of George Washington, originally designed and sculpted by Laura Gardin Fraser as part of the 1932 quarter honoring Washington’s bicentennial. Inscriptions on this side read “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “2024.” Celebrate the courage and achievements of these extraordinary women who have driven historic change by starting or expanding your collection of the new American Women Quarters.
