James A. Garfield Presidential Silver Medal

$90.00

President James Garfield truly embodies the essence of the American dream, rising from humble beginnings to achieve remarkable heights through hard work, intellect, and a commitment to public service. His early achievements as the youngest member of the Ohio State Legislature and the youngest Major General in the Union Army during the Civil War highlight his dedication and leadership.

Garfield’s vision for government reform, particularly his desire to eliminate the spoils system in favor of merit-based appointments, was groundbreaking. He understood the importance of protecting the rights of all Americans, particularly those who had been disenfranchised, and his inaugural address reflected this commitment. Tragically, his assassination just months into his presidency cut short his efforts for reform, but his legacy lived on through the actions of his successor, Chester A. Arthur.

The Presidential Silver Medal honoring Garfield is a beautiful tribute to his short but impactful presidency, showcasing the craftsmanship of the United States Mint and serving as a reminder of his contributions to American democracy and civil rights. It stands as a testament to his vision for a more equitable and just government.

James A. Garfield served as the 20th president of the United States from March 1881 until his untimely death in September of that same year, following an assassination attempt in July. Before his presidency, Garfield was a distinguished lawyer and Civil War general, representing Ohio in the U.S. House of Representatives for nine terms. Notably, he is the only sitting member of the House to have been elected president. Garfield had also been elected to the U.S. Senate by the Ohio General Assembly but declined the position when he became president-elect.

The obverse (front) of the medal features a bust of James A. Garfield, accompanied by the inscription “JAMES A. GARFIELD.”

On the reverse (back), a wreath made of laurel and oak leaves is elegantly intertwined with crossed ribbons. Within the wreath, the following inscriptions appear: “INAUGURATED PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES MARCH 4, 1881,” “ASSASSINATED JULY 2, 1881,” and “DIED SEPT 19, 1881.”
