No one could have foreseen that Ulysses S. Grant, the reserved son of an Ohio leather tanner, would rise to become one of the nation’s greatest generals and the 18th President of the United States. Acknowledged for his bravery during the Mexican-American War, Grant’s skill in battle and strategic thinking distinguished him from his peers. His achievements on the battlefield facilitated his rapid ascent through the ranks, ultimately earning him the title of Major General of the United States Army. During the Civil War, he led the Union Army with unwavering support from President Abraham Lincoln, and on April 9, 1865, General Grant accepted the Confederacy’s surrender at Appomattox, marking the official end of the war.
In the 1868 presidential election, Grant faced little opposition, securing the 18th presidency with ease. He was committed to continuing Lincoln’s policy of reconciliation with the South, believing it essential for preserving the Union he had fought so hard to defend. A lifelong abolitionist, Grant was deeply concerned about the plight of former slaves and the racism they endured in both the North and South. He occasionally implemented martial law to counter Ku Klux Klan violence. In 1870, he signed the 15th Amendment, granting Black men the right to vote, though he struggled to ensure its enforcement as Southern states enacted Jim Crow laws. In 1875, he publicly declared that he would not seek a third term, adhering to the two-term precedent established by George Washington.
This remarkable Presidential Silver Medal honors Ulysses S. Grant’s presidency, crafted with 99.9% fine silver by the United States Mint.
