1889 CC Morgan Silver Dollar: A Guide for Coin Enthusiasts

1889 CC Morgan Silver Dollar

The 1889 CC Morgan Silver Dollar is a famous coin among collectors because of its historical significance and rarity. The Carson City Mint Morgan dollar series’ important date entry is fully explained in this article.

A premium Brilliant Uncirculated example of the 1889 CC Morgan Silver Dollar is highly sought after. Its untoned silver-white surfaces are fully struck with a softly frosted texture to the devices. The fields are modestly reflective, a feature best appreciated under strong light. Uncommonly smooth for its grade, this piece is nearly in the Choice Mint State category, making it a standout for advanced Morgan dollar and Carson City Mint enthusiasts.

History of 1889 CC Morgan Silver Dollar

After a five-year suspension of minting Silver Dollars for circulation in the US, the Bland-Allison Act of February 28, 1878, resumed the coinage of the Silver Dollar. The selected design was created by George T. Morgan. Morgan Silver Dollars were minted with fervor and are always managed with the same enthusiasm today. Produced from 1878 to 1904, and again in 1921 and 2021, these coins have a special place in American numismatic history.

Reverse

Its reverse shows a heraldic eagle having its wings spread, holding arrows and an olive branch in its mouth. The words “ONE DOLLAR” is etched below the eagle, and “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” has been imprinted above it. The “CC” mint mark for Carson City is located under the wreath.

Rarity and Condition

The 1889-CC is the rarest Carson City silver dollar of this type, but it is not the most common in mintage among Carson City Morgan dollars (the 1885-CC produced 228,000 pieces). With a mintage of 350,000 coins, the 1889-CC suffered a high rate of attrition. Unlike issues such as the 1881-CC, 1882-CC, and 1883-CC, only a few 1,000-coin bags of the 1889-CC emerged from government vaults before the 1960s. By 1964, only a single 1889-CC was dispersed in the GSA sales from 1972 to 1980. Much of the mintage was likely melted under the 1918 Pittman Act. Circulated survivors are scarce, and Mint State coins are rare by Morgan dollar standards.
