The American Women Quarters honor a diverse group of remarkable women who have made significant contributions across various fields, including suffrage, civil rights, abolition, government, humanities, science, space, and the arts. These women come from ethnically, racially, and geographically diverse backgrounds.
Eleanor Roosevelt stands out as one of our most active and influential First Ladies. She was an author, reformer, civil liberties and human rights advocate, and the first American woman delegate to the United Nations, participating in the inaugural delegation.
The reverse design features Eleanor Roosevelt alongside the scales of justice, set against a backdrop representing the globe, symbolizing her impactful work with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Inscriptions include “UNITED STATES of AMERICA,” “QUARTER DOLLAR,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “ELEANOR ROOSEVELT,” and “UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS.”
The common obverse depicts a portrait of George Washington, originally designed by Laura Gardin Fraser for the 1932 quarter commemorating the bicentennial of Washington’s birth. Inscriptions on the obverse are “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “2023.”
