In December 1921, Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon approved the design of the Peace Dollar, which replaced the Morgan Dollar and symbolized the peace established between the U.S. and Germany. Crafted by the esteemed Italian American sculptor Anthony de Francisci (1887-1964), the Peace Dollar represented the nation’s emergence as an international power while honoring the sacrifices of its citizens during World War I and celebrating victory and peace. To commemorate its centennial anniversary, the Peace Dollar was reintroduced in 2021, featuring a stunning proof finish.
The obverse (heads side) showcases a profile of Liberty, adorned with a radiant crown. Inscriptions on this side include “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the year of issuance. The reverse (tails side) depicts an eagle at rest, clutching an olive branch above the word “PEACE.” Additional inscriptions read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “ONE DOLLAR.”
